Edgewood Elementary: Numeracy Night

Numeracy Night at Edgewood Elementary was a fun and meaningful experience that brought students, families, and educators together through math. One of the highlights for us was sharing our kindergarten game, Bugz with the students and their families. Designed to support early numeracy skills like counting, number recognition, and turn-taking, Bugz quickly became a hit with both the kids and the adults. It was incredibly rewarding to see families laughing and learning together as they played. Sarah and I had the opportunity to meet many of the students and their parents, and it was clear how valuable that face-to-face connection was. Standard 4 of the BCTF Professional Standards for Educators emphasizes the importance of valuing the involvement and support of parents, guardians, families, and communities in schools. Numeracy Night brought this principle to life for me. By creating a welcoming and interactive environment, we were able to begin building a bridge between home and school, and what that may look like in a future classroom of my own. These kinds of events highlight just how important it is for teachers to reach out to families and invite them into the learning process. I believe it brings mutual respect, open communication, and a sense of shared purpose when it comes to supporting students. As a future educator, I left the evening feeling energized and inspired. It reminded me that learning doesn’t stop at the classroom door, and that meaningful connections with families can make a huge difference in how supported a child feels at school. Plus, it was a lot of fun!
